Starting A Home Business
Become An eBay Seller Selling Vintage Clothing
If you have a good eye for fashion an and interest in fashion trends, a home based business selling items of vintage clothing on eBay could be a highly rewarding way for you to make money working at home doing something you enjoy. Sellers on eBay are making big money from the sale of all sorts of items on eBay and you can easily become one of them.
Getting Started – The Basics
An eBay seller home business can be started with a small amount of capital and you will incur very little in the way of running costs.

The basic essentials, in addition to stock, for starting an eBay vintage clothing auction business are an Internet connected computer, a digital camera to enable you to take photographs of the items you auction and a PayPal account (the most convenient way of accepting payments), packaging materials (strong paper, parcel tape etc) and funds to pay for postage on your first few sales.
You will need funds to pay for postage when you first start your eBay seller business because the goods you sell must be dispatched immediately the auction is completed and the funds are in your PayPal account. You can’t expect your customers to wait for you to have the money transferred from PayPal to your bank account before you send their purchases to them.
Storage Space
You will need to have a clean dry storage area for your stock of garments. When you start you eBay seller home business, particularly if your budget is limited, you will probably only have a very limited number of items and these can be sealed in plastic bags and hung in any spare cupboard or wardrobe space. When you have established yourself as a vintage clothing seller on eBay, you will almost certainly find your stock of items increases as you go along. Storage space is something you will need to consider eventually but, as long as you can keep your vintage garments clean and dry, even a corner of your garage or attic will be perfectly adequate.
Choose Your Vintage
Fashion conscious people who desire an individualistic look often adopt the style of a particular decade or a mixture of vintage styles. Vintage garments from the 1950’s through to 1980’s vintage items are popular and easy to obtain. Vintage clothing from the 1940’s and earlier are somewhat rarer and, consequently, more expensive and difficult to find. Choose a niche you will enjoy working in and study it. It is better to have an in depth knowledge of one subject than a superficial knowledge of many subjects (remember the saying: "a little knowledge..."?) You will need to be able to accurately describe the items you sell at auction. Enthusiasm and knowledge combined are extremely powerful in any sort of marketing and eBay auctions are no exception.
In order to develop a deep knowledge of your niche, it is usually better to focus on one particular niche when you first start your eBay seller business. Whether you decide to specialise in 1950’s designer dresses or 1980’s vintage accessories, learn everything there is to know on the subject. The more you know about the items you need to purchase for resale, the easier it will be for you to judge the authenticity of garments that are advertised as vintage items. Knowledge of your niche will also mean that you are more likely to recognise bargains that can crop up at garage sales, junk shops or eBay auctions. After all, what is a rare and valuable designer vintage garment to you will be “just an old dress” to most people.
Locating Stock
Garage sales, flea markets, house clearances and eBay auctions are examples of some of the places you will find vintage clothing for sale at bargain prices. The best people to purchase from are the ones who think anything “out of date” is of little or no value, but you might also pick up bargains from niche marketers who want to get rid of items that are not quite right for their niche. For instance an eBay seller who deals only in 1950’s French designer dresses might have bought a job lot containing 1950’s accessories and will be glad to let the accessories go at a reasonable price rather than have them taking up storage space. Look out for “bundles” offered at auctions and other sales. You will often find a valuable vintage garment thrown in with a bunch of worthless junk offered for mere pennies.
It is easy to become an eBay seller, setting up an eBay account couldn’t be simpler and the auctions are easy to run. Most people also find eBay auctions exciting even when small amounts of money are involved. Becoming an eBay seller is one of the easiest and least risky ways to start your own home based business as a vintage clothing seller.
