Choosing a computer to suit your business and your lifestyle

One problem commonly experienced by many people who decide to run a business from home is lack of space. If you have an Internet based home business, lack of space is less of a problem because there is such a small amount of equipment required. In fact, to successfully run an Internet based business, the only essential piece of equipment is a computer with Internet connection. Here are some things to consider when choosing a computer for your home business.

Most home business owners are short of space and have to work in less than perfect conditions. Many home business owners have to operate from their kitchen or dining room table.

This means that they have to pack away the computer when the table is required for its original use and set up their equipment again when the space is once again free. Having an easily portable laptop ("notebook") computer solves this problem neatly. There is no need to waste time fiddling about plugging in components and making several trips to lug pieces of equipment to another temporary destination. You can pick up a laptop computer in one hand and just walk away with it.

If you are fortunate enough to have a whole room as your home office, you won't need to worry so much about the physical dimensions of your computer. You can go ahead and choose the best computer for your needs on the basis of what it can do for you without having to take into account the amount of space it will take up.

A home based business owner who has a dedicated room as a home office can easily accommodate a standard desktop computer because space is not an issue when you have a whole room at your disposal. Even so, it is worth considering whether opting for a laptop computer might make more sense in terms of convenience and your lifestyle. For instance, if you spend much time away from home for any reason, you could take a laptop with you and run your business from wherever you are at any time.

Choosing a laptop computer is also an ideal solution for stay at home moms and dads who need to be able to earn an income from home while caring for young children at the same time. When you are caring for infants, they will be happy playing in a playpen in your home office. However, as kids get older, there inevitably comes a time when being confined to a corner of your home office will not satisfy their needs. Energetic toddlers will need space (indoors and out) to run around and explore but they still need close supervision. With a laptop computer you can sit and work in the living room keeping your adventurous toddler company. With a wireless Internet connection you can even sit and work on the patio while your toddler plays in the sandpit.

Older children will need space to do homework and craft projects or even just to watch TV. Although they might not need much help from you, they should be made to feel that you are available if they need you. It would be setting a bad example if you behaved in an antisocial way by spending too much time isolated in your home office. With a laptop computer, you have the freedom to work in any room where your children are occupying themselves. This enables you to promote a feeling of companionship while providing unobtrusive supervision.

When you have a home based Internet business, space is not the only consideration when choosing equipment. Your first consideration should be to choose equipment which will fit in with family life the way you prefer to live it.
