Self Belief Will Turn Your Dreams Into Reality
By Elaine Currie
The biggest influence on the shape of our destiny is our belief in our own abilities. Self belief determines whether we succeed or fail in reaching our goals and turning our dreams into reality. As Henry Ford said "If you think you can, you’re right. If you think you can’t, you’re right."
I was watching a TV program on the Biography Channel the other day that reinforced the importance of self-belief. The subject of this program dropped out of the education system without a degree, actually, he quit school before he even reached college age and left school with virtually no qualifications. The reason for this academic failure was a combination of dyslexia and a complete lack of interest in school work.
Sadly, the lack of academic achievement was accompanied by a complete lack of sporting achievement. This poor kid, as well as being a dunce and a sporting failure, did not even have good looks to compensate for his shortcomings. He did not have a rich family to help him financially . His parents were not business owners, so there was no chance of slipping easily into a ready made career. He had no obvious skills or talent in art or music, so a career in the creative arts was an unlikely option.
This sounded like the stereotypical beginning for a person who will at best survive by taking poorly-paid employment and, at the worst, will take up a life of crime to supplement his income. His school headmaster is credited with saying on his premature departure from school, ‘I feel sure you will either end up in prison or become a millionaire’. To have any thought that this person had any prospect of becoming a millionaire, you would have to know more than just the bare facts. We can only see the external disadvantages, the headmaster was aware of the inner character. This young man had enormous amounts of self-belief. That self-belief more than made up for any lack of formal education and qualifications.
One thing this prospective jailbird/millionaire had was a gift for spotting a niche for a new business. Unfortunately his first two business ventures failed miserably. As he started his first business at the age of seven, the fact that it failed is not so surprising! The early failures probably served as useful lessons for future ventures.
The short version of this story is that the "hero" built a successful business before he reached the age of twenty, was a millionaire by the age of 25 and had bought and built a house on a Caribbean island before he was thirty. He did not stop at that, he continued in business with ever increasing success.
The subject of the TV program was Sir Richard Branson who is, at the time of writing, a billionaire several times over and still making even more money. He has said he owes his success to hard work, belief in his business ventures and a willingness to take risks. These risks have included the well publicised (and life threatening) hot-air balloon challenges, starting a business on borrowed capital and taking gambles with huge stakes.
Self-belief made it possible to take those risks. Without belief in himself, Richard Branson would not have dared to borrow the money to start his first business as a magazine publisher after leaving school and the story would probably have ended there. Without self-belief the balloon races would not have been contemplated. Without self-belief his ambition to own an airline would have remained just a dream.
"It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believe in myself". These words of Muhammad Ali sum up the essence of what is needed for a person able to reach his goals in life: self belief.
