Starting a Home-Based Business Online:
The First Hurdle

Have you ever thought it would be a good idea to start a home-based business online?

If you have, you are not alone. There are very many people who dream of starting a home-based business of their own and starting an online business is both easy and cheap to do.

The idea of starting your own home-based business typically starts with the dream of working at something you enjoy, setting your own hours and not having to answer to “the man”. Very few people who dream of working from home, actually achieve a successful home based business. For the majority of people, the dream of starting their own home-based business just remains an idle dream. Other people take the bold step of starting a home business but don't achieve success because they have not planned sufficiently at the outset.

The first problem to assail most new home-based business owners is lack of discipline. In the first excitement of being free from the restrictions that go with being employed, they fail to appreciate the importance of discipline and the need for scheduling of tasks. The failure to plan proper work schedules can result in overworking through enthusiasm or not working enough due to lack of organization. The latter has nothing to do with amounts of time spent; it is all about effective time management. If you don’t make proper schedules for yourself, it is highly unlikely that you will manage your time effectively.

An online home-based business is afflicted with more distractions and opportunities to lose focus than the average bricks and mortar world home-based business. A major reason for this is the fact that when you are working online, everything has a sense of immediacy and it is far too easy to get side-tracked and lose hours as the result of one little mouse click. Even though you intend to work hard at your home-based business and you spend 8 hours a day online, if you have no proper scheduling in place, you will find yourself working in an inefficient way where time is frittered away.

Overworking is an easy habit to catch. When you work from home, it can be hard to “leave the office” for the day. You have achieved your dream of no longer having to commute to work but, rather than enjoying the extra time you have made for yourself, you carry on working for longer hours. You push yourself harder and harder in the belief that your business will become successful faster if you put in the extra hours. Unfortunately, this is unlikely to work because human beings have limits and, if you fail to pace yourself, and try to push yourself beyond your natural limits, either of the following results is possible. You might burn out and be unable to continue with the unrealistic pace that you have set yourself because of mental and/or physical exhaustion. Alternatively you might lose momentum and give up before burnout happens because you feel you have no time for yourself or your family and friends because you are always working. If working at building your home-based business takes over your whole life, you will feel that you are worse off as your own boss and the job you hated so bitterly will start to seem not so bad after all.

The solution to avoiding overworking or underachieving lies in careful scheduling. As your own boss, you need to structure your working day so that it has a set time for beginning and ending. To manage your time effectively, each day needs to have a detailed plan setting out all the tasks you intend to complete and to have a time allocation for each job. Your last job each day should be to draw the line under that day’s achievements and finalise the following day’s schedule. Any uncompleted tasks to be carried over to the next day should be slotted in at the beginning of the day. If you are continually carrying work over in this way, your schedule needs to be reassessed to see how improvements can be made. Sometimes, merely altering the order in which you tackle jobs can make the difference between carrying work over and achieving your daily goals.

Effective time management is key to home-based business success. If you fail to plan your time, your working day will be chaotic and you will be working inefficiently. It is all about making the most of your most precious commodity: time.
