The Elusive Work At Home Typing Jobs

By Elaine Currie

If you are looking for a part time work at home typing job, you have plenty of company: there must be many thousands of other people who would love to find work typing at home. When it comes to a home job, legitimate typing work is high up on the most wanted list for several reasons: typing work is clean, easy and requires no special qualifications. Most work at home typing jobs can be done by anyone with reasonable typing skills.

Most people looking for a work at home typing job start by looking for jobs working for local companies and then move on to look for online work from home typing jobs. The result in both areas of search is the same: not enough home typing jobs to go round. If you are desperate to find work typing at home, you might not realise that this lack of home typing jobs can be a blessing.

In the not too distant past (before computers became commonplace) work at home typing jobs were fairly plentiful, partly because a degree of expertise was necessary to produce accurate work typing on a typewriter. Most home typing jobs were done on a casual basis via an agency. In order to keep the agency happy, home typists had to undertake a share of the horrible jobs like home label typing work or typing envelopes, otherwise they would have no hope of getting the nice work typing documents. In case you have never had to do home label typing work, I'll just mention nothing could be more boring and the rate of pay per sheet of labels typed was an insult.

So, if there aren't enough home typing jobs to go round, what can you do? The answer is: make your own job by starting a home business as a freelance typist. Provided you live in a fairly well populated area, this is pretty easy to do. It might take time for you to build the income you want but, with a little patience and perseverance, you will succeed.

Check out the classified ads in your local newspapers. You will find listings for all sorts of small businesses and sole traders. Maybe not butchers, bakers and candlestick makers but certainly carpenters, plumbers, electricians, builders, decorators, auto mechanics, TV repairmen, gardeners, landscapers, tree surgeons, locksmiths. These are all potential clients for a home typing business.

The ideal businesses to provide you with work typing invoices, estimates etc are the sole traders or partnerships who work from home or just have a small workshop or garage as their business premises. These businesses won't have the space or the cash to employ support staff. Most will either do their own typing work or rely on a wife or girlfriend. A few will employ a home worker to do the typing.

Your aim will be to get the offer of your typing service in front of the sole trader who is fed up with doing typing on top of his real job, the one whose girlfriend has dumped him, the one whose wife has enough on her hands looking after the kids, the one whose current home typist moves out of the area. These events won't all happen in the same week, so you need to make sure your typing service is fresh in the minds of likely customers and this means consistent advertising.

Advertising is essential and there are many methods of spreading the word about your typing home business. If you have contacts amongst the small traders in your area, you can make sure your business card gets into circulation. Also make a point of telling everyone you know about your new work at home typing business. The form your advertising takes depends upon your budget. TV and radio commercials are probably out of your reach but classified ads in local newspapers can be a very cheap way of advertising. Flyers left in prominent positions can be effective. Many wholesalers and retail outlets have notice boards where you can post an ad. Target small businesses for mail shots. To cut down on postage, hand deliver to the ones close by.

The best form of advertising is personal recommendation. As soon as you have one happy client, promotion by word of mouth will start to take over and you won't need to put so much effort into advertising. It might happen overnight or it might take a lot longer but, once you have your first client, you are in business. If your business seems to be taking a long while to take off, just remember it could be worse: at least you have been spared home label typing work!
