Child day care facilities are in huge demand and that demand shows every sign of increasing. Starting your own day care business can be very rewarding both in financial terms and in terms of job satisfaction, by offering good day care for children you can lift a heavy burden from parents struggling to earn the money they need to meet essential bills and create a secure future for their children.

For two working parents bringing up more than one child, day care fees are hard to meet but the average single mother (no disrespect intended to all the single fathers, I just refer to mothers here because they are in the majority) with more than one child under school age would simply not be able to afford to put her children in day care and go out to work. Indeed for a single parent family where there is only one child, meeting day care fees is a struggle and most single parents find themselves financially better off if they stay at home and survive on Social Security allowances. According to statistics, the unfortunate increase in the divorce rate is increasing, so there will be even more single parent families struggling to earn a decent living.

When my children were pre-schoolers, I could not afford to pay for day care so that I could go out to work. In those days day care was not particularly expensive, so it was fine if you had one child and wanted to go out to work. The problem was that I had three children and child care fees multiplied by three amounted to more than I would have been able to earn working locally. I could have earned much more if I travelled into the city to work but the extra hours spent travelling would mean having practically no time with my kids, so that was out of the question. That was thirty odd years ago, but things have not changed. In fact, the pressure on women with young children (wives as well as single parents) to take on work outside the home is even greater.

Social Security benefits are not generous and there are plenty of women who would prefer to earn their own living instead of depending on State handouts. Working at home is the obvious solution to this problem but there is a shortage of companies who will employ people to work at home. So if a woman can't go out to work and can't find a job where she can work at home, what can she do to improve her financial circumstances? One answer is that she can start her own business by offering a child day care service in her own home.

Just about any mother who, whether by choice or necessity, stays at home to care for her children, is capable of starting a day care business from home. If you are at home caring for your own children, looking after couple of other children in the same age group is no big deal. Many stay at home mothers already provide occasional day care services on a casual basis as a favour for friends and relatives without thinking anything of it. Professional day care is no different except for one thing: you get paid to do it.

The suggestion that you should start a day care business can seem daunting but, if you consider what providing day care involves, you'll realise anyone can do it provided they like children and are sensible, sober citizens. No professional qualifications are needed and the only new equipment you will need is minimal. If you are already caring for children, you will have the stair gates, childproof locks etc to create a safe child friendly environment. Your only real expenditure would be on the provision of some extra toys, books etc to entertain the relevant age groups.

If you reside in the USA you will need a licence from your State to offer day care and in the UK you need to be registered with your Local Council. In order for you to be licensed/registered as a child minder, your home will have to be inspected by the relevant Government department, who will carry out further inspections at regular intervals. As children are involved you will, for obvious reasons, be required to provide details of anyone in your household who might come into contact with the children in your care.

Don't let the thought of training put you off: the courses are focussed on practical subjects (eg first aid) and their purpose is to help you, not to test you.

Day care as a business is not confined to looking after a couple of children in your own home but starting a home based day care business is a great low-cost way of earning money working at home, learning about running a business and finding out whether you would be happy caring for other people's children as a full-time career.

If you are ambitious and want to earn the maximum income possible as a day care provider, you will want to look at premises to house a proper day care facility. You should also realise that this will involve you in the investment of some serious cash for premises and equipment. Running a larger day care establishment will mean that you will have to employ staff and this will take a large chunk of your budget. You will find that you spend more time actually running the business than caring for the children because there will be so much more administration involved. If teaching children and interacting with them is the thing you like most about the business, it would be wise to consider starting a day care center with a partner who will do the admin. Alternatively you might do well to employ administration staff to do the book-keeping, ordering supplies and all the rest of the day to day paperwork.

If you can't go out to work, offering day care for children is an excellent way of earning money because it requires very little in the way of financial outlay to get started. Your services will definitely be in demand.
