Envelope Stuffing Scams
Envelope stuffing scams have been exposed repeatedly over the years. Cases where scam envelope stuffing companies have been taken to Court and their owners heavily fined or jailed are widely reported throughout the Internet. With all the publicity given to envelope stuffing scams, you might think nobody would ever again be taken in by them.
There are, however, people who are still hoping to find a legitimate envelope stuffing job despite all the publicity that has been given to scam envelope stuffing work. This is understandable because the envelope stuffing scam advertisements target the people who are most in need of an opportunity to earn extra income. The combination of a pressing need to earn more money, persuasive advertising and the fact that the fee involved is small, is enough to make people (often against their better judgement) pay the fee for what is advertised as a legitimate envelope stuffing job.
If you are tempted to pay for an envelope stuffing job, consider the fact that there are machines that can stuff envelopes hundreds of times faster than a human being. A company with lots of envelopes to stuff could buy a machine for a few hundred dollars, so why would they pay you thousands of dollars a month to do the work instead?
Envelope stuffing scams are nothing new: they have been around since the Depression era of the 1920s and 1930s. Envelope stuffing scams can still be found offline but the envelope stuffing scam "industry" has also adapted itself to fit a comfortable niche on the Internet.
How Envelope Stuffing Scams Work
The way the scam works is that the promoters advertise that, in return for payment of a small fee, they will tell you how to earn money stuffing envelopes at home. They are at pains to assure you that they are promoting a legitimate envelope stuffing job but very little information on what the job entails is provided. To get the information, you are asked for a "processing fee" or a "good faith" payment to prove you're serious.
The only way to find out more details is to pay the fee. After paying the fee, you find out that the promoter did not have a legitimate envelope stuffing job to give to you. In fact, this scammer had no employment whatsoever to offer. Instead, for your fee, you'll get a letter telling you to place the same envelope-stuffing "job" ad in newspapers or on the Internet, or to circulate it by email. The only way you'll earn money from this scam is if people respond to your advertisement and you send the replies (ie the envelopes stuffed with fees) to the scammer. You don't earn money stuffing envelopes, you earn money by duping other people into paying the registration fee to the scammers.
An Envelope Stuffing Scam Advertisement
This is a typical envelope stuffing scam advertisement from the Internet:
" How I Made over $420,000 in 12 Months Working from Home"
I would like to Earn some extra MONEY in the comfort of my own Home! But I don’t want to do anything difficult just something I can do in my spare time like stuffing envelopes.
Dear Internet Friend
This is something I asked when I started out and I am sure you do the same. Just imagine stuffing envelopes, mailing letters and banking money, lots of money, in the comfort of your own home!
So, if I said to you all you had to do was stuff envelopes and mail a “special letter” to earn up to $420,000 in just 12 months. Would you spare a few hours a week? Now you're probably saying I don’t want to earn that much just $400, $6300 or $800 a week would be great, well that’s fine because it is down to you…
This is from the FAQ:
Q.I ‘m still not sure what the mailing is?
A. Well, I will supply the Proven ‘Special Letters’ for you to mail out either via Post, Email or Fax. You can then enjoy the rest of the day relaxing.
Q. How much will I be paid and when will I be paid?
A. This will depend on how much time and effort you are willing to give to the mailing. You could earn from $26- $48 for every "special letter" that you send. You can receive a cheque on the 1st and 16th of every month. Remember this "special letter" program can generate up to $420,000 per year.
Q. Is there a catch?
A. No. Obviously, the money you make will depend on mailing the ‘Special Letter’. No effort NO gain!
The sales letter goes on to give a warning about being careful because stuffing envelopes is just so easy and takes so little time, you might accidentally earn $420,000 in 12 months and find your self relaxing on an exotic beach with other rich people. There are numerous mentions of the "special letter" around which this envelope stuffing scam revolves but there is no clue about what is in the "special letter". The only way to find out what is in the "special letter" is to hand over $69.95 to the scammers.
Recognising Scams
The above type of advertising is typical of all sorts of scams, not just envelope stuffing scams and the advertising can be very persuasive. If you are ever tempted by an opportunity that seems too good to miss, consider the following:
1. Why would somebody pay you to do this easy "job"?
2. If there is no real service or product involved, it is likely to be illegal
3. A company is promoting a legitimate opportunity will provide full details without demanding a fee.
4. If a company wants to give you a job, they won't ask you for a fee.
5. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
There are many ways to earn money working at home but envelope stuffing
is not one of them.
