Working At Home - Could You Work As A Call-Center Agent At Home?
How does telecommuting as a home-based call-center agent work? Typically, the agent would be employed by a company as a contractor (ie on a self-employed basis) and paid by the minute for time spent on the phone assisting customers. The agent works in shifts for pre-agreed hours during which the company will use phone routing technology to automatically send calls from customers to the agent. What equipment is needed to become a work at home call-center agent? Apart from a computer with high-speed Internet access, all that is required is a dedicated phone line and a quite place to work. It should be noted that a dedicated phone line is essential. You would not be accepted as a telecommuting call-center employee if you tried to use your personal phone line because your personal calls would interfere with the calls from the company's customers being automatically routed to you. A quiet place in which to work is necessary because calls from customers must not be interrupted by any household distractions such as a barking dog or ringing doorbell. During your shift, you are "at work" just as much as if you were in an office building in town, and the customers calling you must receive your undivided attention for the duration of their call. If you have young children, this means you would need to plan your shifts for times when the children will not be trying to get your attention, eg during school hours, after bed-time or when your partner is at home to take over child-care. Does a home-based call-center agent need any special qualifications? No particular qualifications are required, but previous experience as a call-center agent or in a similar role such as a member of a customer services team will often give you an advantage. Is home-based call-center telecommuting well paid? The rates of pay vary depending upon the level of expertise needed to deal with the customer calls. If the operator is answering customer queries, the rates of pay will be higher than if the job was just to take down phone orders from customers. Telecommuting as a call-center agent from home can be an excellent way of earning a real income from home. The work is not difficult, no expensive equipment needs to be purchased, little or no previous experience is required and the hours of work are very flexible.
