Developing An "Attitude Of Gratitude" - A Sinner's GuideThe Secret of Feeling BlessedMany people who try to harness the power of positive thinking find it difficult to maintain the feeling of gratitude. This is not because they particularly ungrateful persons. These are just ordinary people who have never before tried to develop an attitude of gratitude and it is easy to confuse feeling gratitude with giving thanks in a religious context
This could mean they want to find a cure for a terrible disease or it could be they want to become wealthy. They want different things for different reasons but they all want something. The positive energy needed to achieve their goals will not be cultivated by thinking about that which they want to change. Positive energy will come when they learn to focus on the reasons they have to be thankful. If you are dissatisfied with your living accommodation, don't waste energy in thinking about the details of the ugly décor and poor neighborhood. Counteract any thoughts like that with positive thoughts of how lucky you are to have a home where you can be warm and dry and relaxed. If you are dissatisfied with your present employment, don't mull over the details of what irks you, concentrate on the notion that you are lucky to have a job that puts money into your bank account. Positive thoughts must be used to drive out the negative emotions. The old fashioned way of doing this is called "counting your blessings". Counting blessings has fallen out of favor, probably because of its religious connotations. The counting of blessings has historically been associated with the Christian church and the notion of giving thanks to God. The energy derived from positive thinking is nothing to do with any religion, it does not discriminate. Feeling gratitude for the abundance of the universe does not have to include worship in any form. So, as an ordinary person regardless of creed or culture, what blessings do you have? What reasons do you have to feel grateful? Some people instinctively think of spiritual reasons to be grateful. Others think of material things and are thankful they have things like a great car or that they have money in the bank. Human beings are all different so it is hardly surprising that all sorts of different things work for different people. The important thing is to keep your focus positive. You need to actively drive out negative thoughts and bring in positive thoughts to replace them. It does not matter what you put on your list of reasons to feel grateful. The effect of focusing on those things, the feeling they evoke in you is what is important. The effects derived from positive thinking do not come on a scale depending upon the worthiness of your thoughts. If thoughts of your healthy bank balance make you feel happier and more blessed than contemplating the miracle of life, that is fine. As long as you maintain focus on positive thoughts, you will be rewarded with an increase in the positive energy that will help you achieve your goals.
