Be Positive, Be Lucky
Or Break A Leg

Learn to celebrate good fortune

It is strange the way many people fear good luck. Indeed, it seems as if our society is afraid to experience happiness and optimism for fear that some warped demon of fate will detect these emotions and reverse them in an instant. The advice to be careful what you wish for is sound enough but it should not be interpreted to mean "don't wish for too much" or "don't celebrate when your dreams come true" or "don't show gratitude or happiness".

Our fear of the warped demon of fate is revealed in all sorts of ways. We show anxiety about the future even if forthcoming events should be reasons for excitement and joyous anticipation.

Instead of feeling good, we bring negative energy into ourselves by imagining every twist of fate, every upheaval, minor and major that could possibly intervene to ruin the future.

If we have booked a vacation, we should feel grateful that we have the money to spend on luxuries and happy that we have a pleasant event approaching. This should be a "feel good" time. Instead, we are more likely to spend the intervening time imagining everything that could possibly go wrong and wreck our plans. We worry that the weather might turn unseasonably nasty, that the airline employees might suddenly go on strike, that the holiday hotel might not live up to the description in the brochure. Instead of pleasant anticipation, we conjure up every conceivable disaster that could occur and live in an attitude of negativity as potent as dread.

A woman who has fallen for a gorgeous man who shows every sign of becoming seriously interested in her, should feel good. She is, however, far more likely to feel anxious in case the object of her affection loses interest in her. Instead of feeling good about herself for having attracted the man of her dreams, she imagines flaws, both physical and emotional, in herself. Any positive energy which attracted the man to her will be driven out by these negative thoughts and the woman will radiate negativity. If she does not find a way to restore a positive attitude, the man will be repelled and wonder what attracted him in the first place. By failing to embrace her good fortune in an attitude of gratitude and celebration, the woman has turned it into bad luck.

The fear of good fortune often appears in the guise of false modesty. While modesty might be a virtue, false modesty definitely is not. False modesty is the denial of satisfaction in our achievements. If you have achieved something and are congratulated on your success, don't act like a movie star who pretends she feels unworthy of the award presented to her. Don't brush off the congratulations and praise; accept them gracefully and with thanks.

The fear of bringing bad luck upon ourselves is revealed in small superstitions. There is the theatrical superstition which forbids you to wish good luck to performers going onstage: you must hope they "break a leg". If we refer in an optimistic way to a future event, we quickly cross our fingers to counteract any bad luck we might have attracted through our optimism. We keep secrets and will only refer to certain things in whispers for fear of invoking a jinx.

If you live in fear of the bad luck demon, you will be driving out positive energy and allowing negativity to take you over. Have the courage to deny the existence of the demon and learn to relish your good fortune. Rejoice and feel grateful for every good thing in your life and you will be able to enjoy your present as well as your future.
