Don't Worry, Be Happy
Relax and enjoy life while you are shaping your future
Do you worry about things? Do you try to maintain a positive attitude but falter because you can't see far enough ahead? Do you set yourself goals but then give up your dreams because you can't see how you will achieve them? You will only be able to maintain a positive attitude if you understand the difference between sensible future planning and the destructive anxiety of trying to see into the future.
|
To an extent, worrying about things and attempting to plan ahead is natural and desirable. If we just lived in the moment without thinking ahead at all, we would be living aimlessly and without conscience or morality because we would not consider the consequences of our actions.

If you spend all your money today because you failed to consider that you might need money tomorrow, you will most likely find yourself hungry and with empty pockets tomorrow. Maintaining a positive attitude is not about being reckless or failing to make plans.
Concern for the future can become a negative force. It will hold you back if you allow it to drive out your positive energy. For example, you set yourself a goal of making $100,000 within the next year. In order to achieve that goal, you must remain focused upon it. You must focus on the knowledge that you have the power to achieve your goal, you do not need to know exactly how it will be achieved. Your focus will start to waver the instant you try to look ahead and figure out how you will achieve your goal. If you try but fail to imagine a feasible way of reaching your goal you are likely to become disheartened. You will be filled with negative thoughts and you will give up without reaching your goal.
You can use up your energy imagining all sorts of possible outcomes but you will never be able to see into the future. Perhaps you will earn your target figure because you will land the job of your dreams tomorrow. Perhaps you will find a rare painting in your attic and make $100,000 at auction in six month's time. Perhaps you will win $100,000 in a competition in eleven month's time. Perhaps none of these things will happen and you will achieve your goal in some other totally unforeseeable way.
The future will always be ahead of us. The future will always be invisible, only revealed to us bit by bit, second by second as time unfolds. Trying to see into the future is a pointless waste of energy that you should be using to focus on your goals.
My favourite analogy for the unfolding of the unseen future is that of Dr. Joe Vitale who likens it to making a journey in the dark (as quoted in the book, The Secret ). Imagine needing to make a journey by night. You need to drive 1,000 miles in the dark to get home. Can you see your destination? No, you can only see a matter of yards ahead, just as far as the headlights of your vehicle reach. Would you give up the idea of making the journey because you can't see your destination? No, you would proceed because you know that you will reach home if you continue the journey even though you can't see all the twists and turns you will need to take to get to the end of it. You can't see home but you can picture it in your mind. That mental image is enough to sustain you along the road until the headlights shine on your own front door.
You will reach all your goals by treating them like a journey in the dark. The fact that they are ahead of you is all you need to know. You don't need to be able to see your goals, your mental picture of them is what will sustain you.
