Welcome to Networkers' Calendar in its new format. I hope you are well and safe. We are enjoying calm warm weather in London (that's about to change) and my veggie plot is still producing a few French beans alongside the squash and October strawberries. You can, however, see that winter is on the way: the leaves are shrinking back and big fat bright orange pumpkins are emerging from the undergrowth.

In the last issue, I was pessimistically anticipating the damage about to be caused by hurricane Rita. Mercifully, her power dissipated and the damage was nowhere near what had been feared. While we were watching Rita, Nature decided to take us all by surprise and hit Pakistan with an earthquake. How do you think we are doing now in the battle between Man and Nature? I make that another one on Nature's score. Anyone still think there's no superior power at work? Are you absolutely sure all this is "just happening" and is not a warning?

I've not had a brilliant month, so excuse me if I have a bit of a moan. If you know me at all, you'll know that I love working on the Internet but my account of the working at home life is "warts and all". I don't want to put anyone off the idea of working at home but October was pretty warty for me.

For some time, I have been wanting to add an Article Directory to my website. A couple of weeks ago I came across two lots of software that looked as if they'd do the job. First of all I tried out Article Dashboard as it is free and they have a support forum. After installing it on two websites with two different types of control panel, it would not work and the advice from them was to open an account with their preferred host. As I already have hosting, it made no sense to start paying monthly fees for hosting just to get some free software to work. To be fair, I have seen several examples recently of Article Dashboard being used successfully so, if you don't mind paying for their preferred hosting, this could be a good way to set up an Article Directory.

After this disappointment I decided to buy Article Beach as an offer had been sent to me by Glen Hopkins of Listopt and I had dealt with him before. The money duly changed hands and I installed the software with no problem. There was a subsequent problem in that the software will not accept the password provided to me, the instructions are incomplete and there is no help available. I asked for a refund under the "guarantee" last week but have had nothing (not even an acknowledgment) back. I have been pondering the fact that the Listopt Article Directory is not powered by Article Beach even though it was suggested as an example of the use of an Article Directory.

Then things got worse: just when I though my website was finished I discovered that a lot of pages were not displaying correctly. Some showed only ads and no content and others had the content but it was squished to one side and not very easy to read. This probably happened when I made a lot of changes about two weeks ago but I can't be sure. One thing that puzzles me is that I always check and double check when I make alterations to anything, so I can't understand how such a mess could have escaped notice. That made me wonder whether the problem had been in existence for longer and I only picked it up through using a different browser. The moral of this story is that once you've checked and double checked, make a third time lucky check and, when you are making changes to a website, always view it using different browsers.

This experience did not put me in the happiest frame of mind. Apart from kicking myself for stupidity, I was really p'd off about the time I wasted sorting the mess out. To be honest the whole experience left me decidedly grumpy. When I went shopping I wanted to find the supermarket manager and inflict physical violence on him. Why are they moving everything I need to buy to places where I can't find it in the name of Christmas? More stuff has been shifted every time I go shopping. For goodness sake, let's have Harvest Festival and Thanksgiving before Christmas. We could enjoy the seasons and holidays and celebrations much more if we were allowed by commerce to relax and have them one at a time (and I could get my shopping over with quickly).

Ok, moaning over, it hasn't been all bad. I have been having a highly lucrative time with 12 Daily Pro and I honestly recommend it if you want to make some quick money on the Internet. Some serious internet marketers refuse to become associated with paid to autosurf programmes. It's as if these programmes are not quite respectable compared to MLM programmes but I've no time for such snobbery. My most recent article was about autosurfing for cash and I've included it as the second feature article today. If it is legal and I can make money at home, count me in! I also discovered Adsense For Newbies which is very useful for anyone starting out with ad sense. If you've heard of Mark Creighton, you'll know the sort of quality you'll get here.

As part of my ongoing crusade to find useful free stuff, I have been testing Email Cloaker. This enables you to have email contact via your website but in a form that makes it impossible for harvesters to steal your address. It's completely free, easy to use and it works.

The webmasters and webmistresses who own get paid to auto surf sites are, in the main, honest hard-working people, who want to have a thriving business which will bring them an ongoing income for the future. I'm not saying all auto surf for cash sites are run by saints, the owners are just ordinary people who want to make a living on the Internet, and the industry (like any other) has its share of rogues and thieves who will take your money and run, plus a few inept webmasters who just have no idea how to run a business and lose everyone's money.

So, you might ask, how do I take sensible precautions against getting stung? The answer, like most things, is simple! Investigation is the answer. If you like the look of a get paid to auto surf site, join as a free member and check out the forum (if there is one). Surf to test the quality of surfing and don't invest if the surfbar is unpredictable. Email the owner to ask about the site. If you get no reply, drop the site there and then: any website owner who takes a pride in his business will respond to a member's enquiry. If you get a terse reply, pointing out that the answer to your dumb question is in the site faq's, this is still good: an abrupt reply probably means the owner is busy or has got sick of answering the same stupid questions. The point is that he is human and bothered to respond. Don't even think of giving your money to someone who ignores you from day one.

Do an Internet search for forums concerned with making money online, make money at home, auto surfing, get paid to programmes etc. Read what the members are saying about the sites you are thinking of joining as this is usually a good indicator of whether the site is growing or declining. Don't, however, totally rely on the opinion of forum members because the posts often tend to be a bit hysterical and they are, of course, the voicing of personal opinions and not a handing down of the wisdom of gurus.

Check out get paid to auto surf review sites. I don't mean the one page free websites that have been built simply to advertise one person's choice of programmes and build a downline. Look for serious reviews which are regularly updated, these are more likely to be written by dedicated surfers. There are some very good ones around now: I came across one just this week, where you can sign up for a course of get paid to auto surf lessons and a weekly newsletter. This sort of service takes real energy and commitment.
