Search Engine Optimization (the English spelling "optimisation" is rarely used on the internet) is a subject which fascinates and often tortures webmasters.
What is Search Engine Optimization? The following is the definition to be found at Wikipedia, the online encyclopaedia:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is a set of methodologies aimed at improving the ranking of a website in search engine listings. The term also refers to an industry of consultants that carry out optimization projects on behalf of client sites.
To obtain maximum search engine visibility, a website must tailor itself to be found by its target audience through internet searches. If a site is to be found, it must contain keyword phrases that match the phrases the target audience is typing into search queries. These keywords are determined by search engine spiders that analyze web page content and keyword relevancy based on an algorithm. Search engine optimization is the process of configuring a website to be more visible to its target audience.
That makes Search Engine Optimization sound quite straightforward but, in reality, it is a highly complex subject. Thousands of articles have been written about Search Engine Optimization, there are forums devoted to the study of Search Engine Optimization, there are blogs about Search Engine Optimization. There's no shortage of advice but webmasters still struggle when trying to apply Search Engine Optimization to their websites. Theory is all very well but Search Engine Optimization is tough in practice and it is difficult for webmasters to know if they have got their optimization right because the search engines do not publish a list of Search Engine Optimization Rules.
Study of Search Engine behaviour has revealed that Search Engines do not like cheating and by making your site more accessible and usable for humans, you also make it more attractive to Search Engine Robots. Content is king and good content is supreme ruler.
Using good content is probably the single most important thing you need to do if you want to be found on the web. Even if your site is technically perfect for search engine robots, it won’t do you any good unless you also fill it with good content. Good content is text that is factually and grammatically correct, though that is not necessarily a must for all kinds of sites. Whatever your site is about, the content needs to be unique and/or specific enough to appeal to people. More specifically, it needs to be useful to the people you want to find your site.
Good content brings return visitors. Return visitors who like your content will eventually link to your site, and having lots of inbound links is great for search engine rankings, especially if those links are from highly ranked sites. Closely related to good content is fresh content. By adding new content regularly, you give visitors a reason to come back. Search engine robots will also visit your site more often once they notice that you update regularly, which means that any new content you add will be indexed quicker.
Fresh content does not include pages which have been churned out by software for the sole purpose of adding keyword rich pages to a website for the sole purpose of luring in the Search Engine robots. They recognise the footprint left by this type of software and penalise the guilty webmaster.
So, it's bad news if you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get great results with Search Engine Optimization. It is extremely bad news if you have spent money on Search Engine Optimization "cheat" software. Instead, expect to do some hard work, especially when it comes to the content of your site. You will also need patience. Results do not come overnight
