Virtual Assistant Work At Home Jobs
The Who, What, How and Why of Virtual Assistant Work At Home Jobs
By Elaine Currie
Virtual Assistant (VA) jobs are a product of the technological age. The Internet makes it possible for a Virtual Assistant to provide a service to a business on the other side of the world. Virtual Assistants can provide all the services of an in-house Personal Assistant without ever meeting their employers. All the usual secretarial and administrative services can be provided whilst communicating by way of email, fax, telephone and post.
What is a Virtual Assistant? A Virtual Assistant is an independent contractor (usually working from home) who provides services normally provided by a PA or secretary. There are many different types of Virtual Assistant work. A Virtual Assistant's services include Internet research, word processing, medical or legal transcription, database management, e-mail handling, reminder service, telephone answering service, bulk mailings, information processing, and any other tasks which would be delegated to the office secretary. Many Virtual Assistants also provide web development, design and maintenance services; meeting and event planning; desktop publishing; and bookkeeping. The services provided depend upon the Virtual Assistant's knowledge, qualifications, skills and creativity.
Who needs a Virtual Assistant? Virtual Assistants work mainly for sole contractors, small business owners, entrepreneurs etc who need support but who don't have the budget, suitable premises or the need for full time staff. Many small business owners benefit enormously by being able to delegate work to a Virtual Assistant. Simply by freeing up a couple of hours each day they can spend extra time on business matters or enjoying more time with their families. Although the majority of people nowadays are keyboard literate to some extent, there is still work that is best given to a qualified Virtual Assistant. For instance, a small business owner might be perfectly capable of typing a brief email using two fingers to "hunt and peck" but this technique would make production of a long document a laborious task. It would be a far more sensible use of time to pass the bigger typing jobs to an expert typist who will complete the tasks in half the time and make a better job of them.
Why use a Virtual Assistant? An employer who chooses the services of a Virtual Assistant over an employee will benefit in many ways. There will be a saving in overheads such as office space, furniture, utility bills, equipment (the Virtual Assistant will provide all necessary equipment), holiday and sickness pay. The business owner who uses the services of a Virtual Assistant will not have to worry about supervising the VA: as a self-employed contractor, the Virtual Assistant will complete the work properly and on time in order to fulfil the contract and receive payment.
Why become a Virtual Assistant? Working as a Virtual Assistant means you can work from your own home. This is a wonderful occupation for mothers who do not want to leave their children in the care of strangers but who still need to earn an income. Being an independent contractor gives you complete flexibility in your working hours and you can tailor the service you offer to suit yourself. Having your own home based business as a VA will increase your feelings of achievement and self-worth and this in addition to the freedom to work from home is priceless.
