Making Changes To Your Webpages Using WEBe-panel
A Basic Guide
By Elaine Currie
Beginners Only Read On!
Welcome to the wonderful world of amateur web design!
The only qualification needed to use these guidance notes is a complete absence of any technical knowledge or formal training in any way related to computers or the Internet. If you have received training in website design, html or computers generally, please go away now because otherwise you will be very bored. We are going to start from a position of zero knowledge and take baby steps to learn how to do a few simple tasks.
If you have no more than a hazy idea of html and are terrified at the thought of making changes to your website, this is for you. I had my website for months before I dared to so much as peek at the control panel, I was convinced I would destroy something vital but after a bit of reading and a great deal of trial and error the control panel is no longer scary.
First off, don't be scared. If you take a few simple precautions, you won't lose any pages from your website and, as far as I know, your control panel is indestructible. What is a web page after all? It contains some code to make it display in certain ways but, apart from that, it's pretty much like any document you might have saved on your pc. Provided you make a copy before you start, you can do what you like to a web page and then put it back to its original state.
The Control Panel
These notes are written specially for Host 4 Profit members, so all descriptions here relate to the Host 4 Profit control panel (WEBe-panel). Click here to see the screen you will get when you first log in:
Making A Backup
Before you make any changes to your website, take a backup copy. Click on the icon labelled "Website Backup Manager" (four rows down, second from right). Click here to se the next screen.
Click on the "Create My Website Backup" bar at the bottom of the page. Click here to view the next page.
All you need to do is click the blue "click here" link and choose the "save to disc" option. Once the download has finished just click to return to the main menu.
Control Panel Icons
To start making changes to your website, you need to click on the "File Manager" icon (top row middle). This will take you to a screen which looks like this, but which will probably contain more files (the files are your web pages). The actual screen in this shot is of a small sub-directory:
Just above the index of files, you will see an explanation of the icons used throughout the control panel. You will see that each file has a set of these icons to the right hand side. The ones you will need to use are as follows:
If you click on this icon, you will see a box inviting you to rename the file. If you want to rename it, just type in the new name and click "ok".
If you click on this icon, you will permanently delete the file.
This is the icon to click when you want to edit the web page.
This icon displays the web page.
Adding Pages
Immediately below the index of files, you will see two boxes identified as "Create directory" and "Create file". You simply type in the name you want to give the new file or directory and click on the button.
Uploading Pages
The final section of the directory is where you can upload files you have saved on your computer. As it says, you can select and upload up to five files at a time. (I only ever use this function to upload images as I find copy/pasting just as quick to use for documents.) If you click on the "Browse" button, it will open a window displaying files stored on your pc. Double click on the file you want to upload and its name will appear in the box in the "File to be uploaded" column. If you then click on the box next to it under "File name to be saved as" the name of the file will be automatically inserted but you can change the name to anything you want. Just remember that images should have the extension "gif" or "jpg" and documents need "htm" or "html".
Editing A Web Page
In order to further reduce fear levels, it is a good idea to always make a copy of the page you are about to work on and save it on your pc. To do this, click on the "edit" icon beside the file, right click on the document when it has opened, "select all", copy and paste it into a notepad page and save it using the same name it has on your website. Once this has been done, it doesn't matter if you fill the page with rubbish or delete it by accident, you can simply copy/paste it back to its original form from the notepad saved on your pc. If anything goes wrong at this stage, just click "return to directory" at the top of the screen and any accidental changes will not be saved.
If you use a text editing programme, this is the time to put it to work. If you are going to edit using notepad, paste the web page you copied into a new notepad page and set to work. If you are making major changes to a web page, it is convenient to make yourself a test page (using the "Create file" box) to view your handiwork and tweak the results before letting it loose on the public domain. After each set of satisfactory changes, save the notepad under a new name (eg "newpage1","newpage2" etc) so that you can revert to a partially amended page instead of losing hours of work if your final change goes horribly wrong.
Another Word About Backing Up
This precaution is easy to forget when you are excited about a project but it is worth spending a few seconds just to save your work. I once spent hours editing a web page and I was very pleased with the result. There was just one tiny change I wanted to make so I didn't bother to save the file. I have no idea what I did wrong but my beautifully laid out web page ended up looking like something by Picasso on a bad day (or a good day depending how you feel about Picasso). It then took me several more hours to get the page back to the way it was supposed to be. Now I back up at every stage. Trust me, you don't want to learn this lesson the hard way.
HTML?
If you don't know anything about html, you will find a very basic article here. HTML is not as difficult to understand as you might think. You should have no problem in learning enough html to make simple changes to your website and there are plenty of websites where you can get free tutorials.
